A Cedar Rapids man was just one number away from winning a big Powerball jackpot last week and ended up winning $50,000.
However, John Neuhaus said he did not know he won until his wife, Carla, had his ticket checked at a local drug store last week.
John said his wife works at the store where his winning ticket was purchased, Hy-Vee Drugstore, 1520 Sixth St. SW in Cedar Rapids, and she heard that someone who bought a ticket there had won $50,000. She checked John's ticket there Dec. 29 and sure enough, he won.
"I think the most I ever won was seven or eight dollars," Neuhaus told lottery employees Friday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Neuhaus matched four of the first five numbers and the Powerball in the Dec. 28 drawing to win a $50,000 prize.
Neuhaus is a 66-year-old retired mechanic and said he plans to save a majority of his winnings.
