Imagine walking around for a month with a million-dollar Powerball ticket in your wallet and not knowing it. That's what happened to Roberto Portillo of Sterling, Virginia.
Mr. Portillo matched the first five numbers in the May 7 Powerball drawing to win $1 million. But he didn't realize that because the ticket remained in his wallet.
Finally, more than a month later, he asked a store clerk to check the numbers on the ticket, and discovered he'd won big.
"That's incredible!" he said as he claimed his prize. "I still can not believe it!"
He bought the ticket at the 7-Eleven at 6720 Old Dominion Drive in McLean. He used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select the numbers on his ticket.
Mr. Portillo, who works as a city bus driver, said he has no immediate plans for his winnings.
