#powerball High Point woman empties her pockets; $200,000 ticket falls out

June 7th, 2016

Some people keep their Powerball tickets in their wallets. Others place their tickets on the dresser by the bed. Patricia Watley of High Point stuck her Powerball ticket in her back pocket where it stayed for two days after Saturday's drawing before she discovered it was worth $200,000.

"I was walking around with this ticket in my back pocket, and didn't even know it," said Watley on Tuesday as she claimed her prize. "Can you believe it?"

Watley bought the ticket at Tobacco Land on East Lexington Avenue in High Point, but she said she didn't check the ticket until Monday night. That's when she discovered the numbers on the ticket had matched the numbers of four white balls and the Powerball. The 4X multiplier drawn Saturday night meant Watley's $3 Power Play ticket was worth $200,000.

Watley said she picked her numbers using a combination of her family’s birthdays. "I just had a feeling to use those numbers," she said.

After required state and federal tax withholdings, Watley received $138,500. She said she plans to donate some of the prize to her church and then pay bills.
