Winning a $1 million Powerball prize turned a morning work meeting into an extraordinary event for a Genesee County lottery club.
The Lucky 18 Lottery Club won the $1 million prize from the Michigan Lottery by matching the five white balls drawn in the Jan. 13 Powerball drawing. The club bought the winning ticket at the Beacon & Bridge Market, located at 820 North Saginaw Street in Holly. Holly is about 15 miles South of Flint.
"I collected everyone's money and bought 22 Powerball tickets the day of the drawing," said club member Diana Rushlow. "The next morning, a few of us were about to begin our normal Thursday morning meeting when another club member asked me if I bought the tickets at the Beacon & Bridge. When he told me a winner was bought there, we started checking the tickets right away."
After they found the winning ticket, the group of health care professionals put their meeting on hold and called the Lottery.
"The call was really surreal," said Rushlow. "When Lottery officials confirmed we had a $1 million winner, I couldn't believe it."
After the club's big win was confirmed, Rushlow gathered all 18 club members to tell them they had won $1 million.
"The looks on their faces were priceless," said Rushlow. "It's safe to say it was the best Thursday morning meeting we've ever had. It was really hard to stay focused and keep working."
The Lucky 18 Lottery Club visited Lottery headquarters Friday to collect their big prize. Each member of the club received an equal share of the $1 million prize, about $55,000.
All but four people who work in the medical office took part in the club's purchase.
"The four people who decided not to play were the first to get their money in for the next drawing," said Rushlow. "They were happy for us when we won, and I'm hoping we'll get another big win for them in the future!"
