A Council Bluffs man gave his wife an early morning wake-up call after learning he won big playing Powerball.
Cary Cozad said he was checking his Powerball ticket on the Iowa Lottery's website and discovered that he matched four white balls and the Powerball in the July 9 drawing to win a $10,000 prize.
Despite the early morning time, the 63-year-old retiree said he couldn't wait to share his good news. His wife, Lisa, was the first to find out.
"Woke my wife up at about 3 o'clock in the morning and told her, 'I think I got four numbers and the Powerball and it looked like I won $10,000.' And she was happy I woke her up," Cozad told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Friday at the lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs.
The winning numbers in that night's $124.9 million jackpot drawing were: 9-25-42-55-57 and Powerball 14. The Power Play® number drawn was 2. One ticket sold in Ohio won the jackpot in the July 9 drawing. Wednesday's Powerball jackpot is an estimated $50 million.
Lisa checked the winning numbers herself and confirmed that her husband had won a $10,000 prize.
"She was ecstatic," Cozad said. "I just told her, 'I checked it about four or five times and I don't believe it either, but that's what it says.'"
The couple said their lottery winnings will be used to replace a deck on their home.
