#powerball Arlington man wins $1 million playing Powerball - One number away from hitting the jackpot

August 20th, 2014

As soon as he saw the winning numbers, Tim Dudgeon knew he'd won big in the July 16 Powerball drawing. After all, he's played the same numbers for years.

They're a combination of birthdays and the jersey number of former basketball star Patrick Ewing. On that night, those numbers won Mr. Dudgeon a million dollars.

The Arlington man bought the winning ticket at Mia's Market and Deli, 1607 South Glebe Road in Arlington. On July 23 he returned to the store to receive his prize from Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

The winning numbers for that drawing were 5-15-18-26-32 and Powerball number was 35. His ticket matched the first five numbers and missed only the Powerball number. If he'd matched all six numbers, he would have won a jackpot estimated at $50 million.

Mr. Dudgeon said he has no immediate plans for his winnings.
