The first day of summer was June 21st and it sure was a hot one for Joseph Hawkins of Moosup, which is why he wasted no time getting to CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill Monday morning to claim his prizeāa scorching $2,000,000 Powerball win.
"I stopped at a convenience store the next day to scan my ticket. I've never seen that many zeros before on a ticket checker," exclaimed Hawkins with a laugh. "Just to be sure, I had the clerk check it again for me and he gave me the claim ticket. I couldn't believe it."
The winning Powerball numbers on June 21, 2014 were 5-6-37-41-54, the Powerball number was 26. Hawkins' "Quick Pick" ticket matched all five of the winning numbers, but missed the Powerball number.
Because Hawkins added the "Power Play®" feature to his ticket for an extra $1, his "Match 5" prize was automatically doubled from $1,000,000 to $2,000,000. He received a prize check for $1,355,001 (value after taxes).
"I'm going to take care of my kids and buy each of them a home," said a teary-eyed Hawkins. "I have a son and a daughter; it hasn't always been easy for us."
Hawkins' winning ticket was purchased at Rob's Wine & Spirits Shoppe located at 784 Norwich Road in Plainfield. A retailer since 2012, Rob's Wine & Spirits will receive a $2,500 bonus check from the CT Lottery for selling the ticket.
