#powerball Portsmouth couple wins $1 million playing Powerball One number away from hitting the jackpot

April 7th, 2014

When Calvin Spencer received a phone call from his father saying a ticket bought in Portsmouth had won $1 million in the March 12 Powerball drawing, he began to wonder. Calvin and his wife Zatera checked and discovered that million-dollar ticket was theirs!

They bought the winning ticket at Barber Tire & Auto, 5701 Portsmouth Blvd. in Portsmouth. On March 18 they returned to the store to receive their prize from the Virginia Lottery. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

"It feels great, fantastic," said Mr. Spencer. "It feels like a blessing."

The winning numbers were 15-15-28-37-54 and Powerball number was 10. Their ticket matched the first five numbers and missed only the Powerball number. If they had matched all six numbers, they would have won a jackpot estimated at $60 million. There was no jackpot winner in that drawing, and this was the only ticket in the nation to win the second prize by matching the first five numbers. They used Easy Pick, allowing the computer to randomly select the numbers on their ticket.

Powerball is hot in Virginia. In the past 13 months, Powerball players in the Commonwealth have won 12 $1 million prizes, a $2 million prize and a $217 million jackpot.

The couple owns a health care agency in Portsmouth. They said they have no immediate plans for their winnings.
