#powerball Springfield man wins a cool $1 million playing Powerball

April 7th, 2014

For about 11 days, Robert Manning was sitting on a million dollars. That's not a figure of speech. He had a Powerball ticket worth $1 million in his wallet, and he didn't know it!

When he finally decided to clean out his wallet ("It was getting too fat," he said), he came across about a dozen Powerball tickets. When he checked the numbers, he discovered one of his tickets matched the first five numbers to win $1 million.

"It feels crazy," he said as he presented his winning ticket to Virginia Lottery officials. "It feels like there's nine million things going through my mind.

He bought the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven at 6221 Rolling Road in Springfield for the March 5 drawing. The winning numbers were 3-7-9-26-54, and the Powerball number was 19. Had the ticket matched that final number, the Powerball number, it would have won the $40 million jackpot.

The federal employee said he has one child in college and another planning to go to college next year, so the win comes at a good time.
