Ed Smith ended his fishing trip in Ocean City without making a big catch, but he had a nice surprise waiting for him when he arrived home in New Holland.
Ed and his wife had reeled in a winning Powerball ticket worth $40,000.
"I'd just gotten home when Stephanie said, 'Sit down.' Of course, I thought bad news was coming," Ed said with a chuckle.
"When she told me what we'd won, I couldn't believe it. We went to the store, checked the ticket again and sure enough, it was a $40,000 winner."
They purchased the winning ticket, a Quick Pick, at Kmart in Lancaster.
Ed says he plays Powerball fairly regularly, and almost always plays whenever the jackpot is high.
The Smiths plan to use their winnings to make home improvements.
