#powerball Eveleth Resident Wins $1,000,000 Playing Powerball

September 9th, 2013

Richard Mervich has a favorite saying: "It's a matter of when—not if—I'm going to win something." His big win happened on August 31 when the first set of numbers on his two-line Powerball quick-pick ticket matched those drawn that night to win $1,000,000.

On Sunday, Sept. 1, the Eveleth resident said he jumped in his truck to run some errands, and decided to check the Hot Lotto® and Powerball tickets he purchased for the drawing the night before.

The Hot Lotto ticket came up as a non-winning ticket, but Mervich got a very different result when he scanned the Powerball ticket. After getting a message that he needed to claim the prize at the Lottery office, Mervich showed the ticket to the clerk. She printed the winning numbers for August 31 and checked them against the numbers on Mervich's ticket. "She told me I matched the first five white numbers," he recalled. "I grabbed the ticket and looked at it and thought, 'I won $200,000!' I didn't believe it."

A friend left Mervich a message on Monday night that he thought the prize for matching the first five numbers was worth $1,000,000. Mervich said he looked on the back of a Powerball playslip and confirmed that he did in fact win $1,000,000.

When Mervich claimed the $1,000,000 prize at Lottery headquarters in Roseville on Sept. 5, he said with a hearty laugh, "When I woke up this morning I felt like a million bucks!"

Eveleth Short Stop, located at 410 Grant Ave. in Eveleth, sold the $1 million winning ticket.
