#powerball McHenry Man Wins $1 Million Powerball Prize

July 19th, 2013

"Every time I buy a Lottery ticket I dream of winning, but I never really expect to win—so this is quite a shock," said Scott Chapman after winning $1 million by matching the first five numbers in the Wednesday June 12 Powerball drawing. Today, Illinois Lottery officials presented Chapman with an oversized check for $1 million. "Now it's getting easier to believe I really did win," he said.

The lucky lottery player and his wife Chris have lived in McHenry for more than 25 years. This fall, the couple's two sons will both be in college. "This Lottery windfall will really help our boys with their college expenses," Chapman said. He will also use the winnings to pay bills and take a vacation. "My wife loves the beach so we'll go somewhere tropical." He plans to keep his job as a remodeling contractor.

Chapman bought his winning Powerball Quick Pick ticket at 7-Eleven located at 3808 West Elm Street in McHenry. He returned to the store to check his ticket and when the Lottery scanner screen displayed the message "file a claim", he handed his ticket to the clerk who then confirmed that it was a $1 million winner. The 7-Eleven received a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Chapman received $700,000 after required state and federal withholding.
