Spending an extra $1 made a $150,000 difference for one of Minnesota's biggest winners in the Aug. 23 Powerball drawing.
A ticket that Michael Brewer of Eden Prairie purchased for the Aug. 23 Powerball drawing matched four of the first five white ball numbers, plus the Powerball, which is normally a $50,000 win. Because he added the Power Play multiplier option to his ticket at the time of purchase, the $50,000 prize was multiplied by the Power Play number (4) to become a $200,000 prize. Power Play is an extra $1 per play.
"I went on the Minnesota Lottery's website at about 10:45 last night and I carefully and meticulously put the numbers into the 'check my numbers,'" said Brewer. After entering the numbers from his ticket, he discovered that he had won $200,000. "I went and woke my wife up. She didn't believe it, so I brought her in the den and had her enter the numbers."
Brewer said that he "usually" adds the Power Play option to his tickets and is very happy that he had added it to his Aug. 23 ticket. "It made a $150,000 difference," he said with a smile.
Dred Scott Automotive, located at 10800 Rhode Island Ave. S. in Bloomington, sold the $200,000 winning ticket.
This is probably the most exciting thing I've ever been through in my whole entire life!" said Isanti resident Danelle VanVleet as she claimed a $50,000 Powerball prize. "I'm still shaking!" she added.
VanVleet said she doesn't normally play Powerball, but decided to try her luck when she saw that the jackpot was estimated at $700 million for the Aug. 23 drawing.
After the drawing, she visited the Minnesota Lottery's website and discovered that she had won $50,000. "I told my husband, 'We just won $50,000! I can't believe this!' He didn't believe me so I said, 'Look for yourself!' I was crying and shaking."
Isanti Mobil, located at 721 Heritage Blvd. N.W. in Isanti, sold the winning ticket.
