#powerball 15 SYSCO EMPLOYEES STEP FORWARD TO CLAIM $1 MILLION POWERBALL PRIZE

March 13th, 2013

For the past twelve years, a group of 15 employees at Louisville, Kentucky's Sysco plant have pooled their money together every week to buy Powerball tickets. Things got exciting for the group when they matched all five white balls but not the Powerball to win $1 million from the March 13, 2013 drawing.

The real excitement began on Thursday morning, when pool member James Dowell of Radcliff began checking their tickets. "On one set of numbers I started circling the numbers we'd matched. Before I knew it, we'd matched all first five numbers," Dowell said. Not sure of what they'd won, he called Brent Biddle of Lexington (one of the members of the group) to see how much they had won with five numbers. Brent initially thought it was $200,000, but it wasn't long before they discovered it was $1 million.

When running into another member of the group, Ken Vetter of Louisville, Ken said, "Give me some good news." James replied, "Well, as a matter of fact, I've got some good news and some bad news." He said good news was that they'd won $1 million. The bad news was they hadn't matched the Powerball number to win the $216 million jackpot for that draw.

Word of their win quickly traveled to the rest of the group, although since Dowell works 3rd shift several of the members didn't find out until Friday.

After calling the lottery five times to verify the winning numbers, Dowell also went to the store where he'd bought their ticket to have it checked. Dowell noticed a sign on the door of the West Point BP that said 'We sold a $1 million Powerball ticket.' "As I walked up to the clerk she told me that the winning ticket hadn't been claimed. Dowell replied, "It has now."

As for as what they'll do with the money, several spoke up and said they'd pay off bills. Dowell plans to remodel his house, while Bobby Carter of Louisville is putting his away for retirement.

After taxes, members will receive around $46,000. The retailer, West Point BP on S. 4th Street in West Point, will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
