#megamillions Mega Jackpot Winners Claim Their Prize

November 16th, 2013

SACRAMENTO – California's newest millionaires have stepped forward to claim their prize.

Anneliese Hansen and Brian Cabaud, both deputy sheriff officers with the Marin County Sheriffs Department, met members of the media today at the Lottery's East Bay District Office to discuss winning their share of the $227 million MEGA Millions jackpot.

The couple has not yet selected the cash or annuity option. If they select the cash option, they would each receive about $24 million before federal taxes. There are no state or local taxes on lottery winnings.

The winning combination of 9, 16, 24, 40, 43 and the Mega number 35 was sold at the Strawberry Chevron located at 580 Redwood Highway in Mill Valley. This retailer will receive a bonus of $375,000, or one-half of 1 percent of the jackpot they sold, for selling the winning ticket.

Counting Saturday's ticket, there have been eight MEGA Millions jackpots won in California – including the historic $315 million jackpot won on November 15, 2005 – resulting in total jackpot winnings of more than $670 million.

More than 95 cents of every Lottery dollar is returned to the community in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retail commissions. The California Lottery contributes at least 34 cents of every dollar that players spend on Lottery products to public education and returns more than 50 percent of sales to players in the form of prizes. Since its inception in 1985, the Lottery has contributed nearly $21 billion to California schools out of total sales of more than $56 billion. Retailers benefit too, earning $3.6 billion in compensation since 1985.
