#megamillions Kalamazoo Lottery Club Claims Millions!

LANSING, June 28, 2010 – Five lucky Kalamazoo area Lottery players have cashed in their winning Mega Millions ticket!

The RRRLB Lottery Club were winners of the June 11 Mega Millions jackpot, worth $36 million. The club was in Lansing today to claim their prize. They opted for the lump-sum value of the prize, or $23,331,173, less the appropriate federal and state taxes.

Members of the club, with Bernard Thelen serving as spokesperson, said they plan to pay off debts and perhaps take vacations. The winners, who are coworkers, said they have played the Lottery together for about 3 years. Their largest prize to date was $150.

While the members all met with reporters to pose with a ceremonial check, the reality of the win set in when they received their actual prize payments.

"All I can say is 'overwhelming'," one member said. "Wow!"

The RRRLB Lottery Club is Michigan's seventh largest Mega Millions jackpot winner and its ninth since the game began in 2002. For selling the winning ticket, the One Stop Shop in Kalamazoo will receive a $50,000 bonus.

Michigan's last Mega Millions jackpot was won in October of 2008.The $36 million Mega Millions jackpot claimed today rolled four times before hitting on June 11. Total Mega Millions sales during this jackpot run were $4,266,211 with Michigan schools earning approximately $1.8 million and retailers earning approximately $307,000 in commissions during this time period. Mega Millions tickets are sold in 42 states.

Over 95 cents of every dollar spent on Michigan Lottery tickets is returned to the state in the form of contributions to the state School Aid Fund, prizes to players and commissions to retailers. In fiscal year 2009, the contribution to schools was $724.5 million. Since its inception in 1972, the Lottery has contributed more than $15 billion to education in Michigan.
