RELEASE DATE: 12/2/2017
A lucky winner in New Jersey has four million reasons to celebrate this holiday season, as a Mega Millions ticket sold in the Garden State won $4 million Friday night! The ticket matched the five white balls drawn December 1 – 16, 22, 40, 41 and 59 – just missing the gold Mega Ball of 8. Because the ticket included the optional Megaplier, it is worth four times the standard $1 million prize after the 4x Megaplier was drawn.
Two other Match 5 winning tickets were sold for Friday's drawing, one each in Nebraska and Texas; they are worth $1 million each.
In the 10 Mega Millions drawings since the game changed effective October 28, promising higher jackpots and more Match 5 winners, there have been 11 Match 5 winning tickets sold. Three included the optional Megaplier, with two worth $4 million (sold in New Jersey and Massachusetts) and one worth $2 million (sold in Texas).
The Megaplier, an optional $1 purchase available in most states, multiplies all non-jackpot prizes by two to five times. Mega Millions is the only game where the second prize can go as high as $5 million if a Match 5 winning ticket includes the Megaplier.
Meanwhile, the jackpot continues to roll, with an estimated $160 million ($100 million cash) up for grabs on Tuesday, December 5.
Six Mega Millions jackpot have been won this year; the most recent prize of $42 million was shared by winners in Michigan and Rhode Island on October 13.
